Our Journey

Reflecting on the past 18 years when God called us to Ann Arbor in 1996 to plant HMCC of Ann Arbor, we can’t help but be filled with a heart of privilege, thankfulness, and amazement at God’s faithfulness to our family and church community. We started the church in 1996 with a desire to join God in fulfilling the Great Commission by “transforming lives and transforming the world.” Since then, we have witnessed the love and power of Jesus Christ in the lives of people from all parts of our communities and world. God has done immeasurably more than we had asked or imagined (Ephesians 3:20)!

The decision to move to Asia to start HMCC of Hong Kong came through several pivotal moments and much prayer as a family. The first key moment was when our family went to Indonesia in 2009-2010 to start HMCC of Jakarta. Toward the end of our time there, we lifted up prayers of surrender. We felt that if God asked us to come back to Asia in the future, we would be available servants.

The second key moment was coming to the realization that God wanted to do something in Hong Kong and China. God revealed this to us by bringing many Hong Kong and Chinese international students to our church. As these students were coming to place their faith in Christ, we discerned that God wanted to send them back to their home countries, in order to spread the Gospel to their families and friends.

The third key moment was when God spoke to Pastor Seth through several verses in the Bible through the Books of Acts and Isaiah. As we prayed through these verses, we knew that God was making His heart known to us about wanting us to “ripple out” beyond Ann Arbor to reach the world, and how Hong Kong would be a key, global city to influence Asia.

The last key moment was when our kids came to their own conviction about Hong Kong. It was important that our kids were a part of the decision-making process, and that God spoke to them as well. After months of prayer and family devotions, God placed it on their hearts to go to Hong Kong. This is when we knew that we, as a family needed to move forward in faith.

As we look ahead and step out in faith, we find strength and peace in knowing that God, who began a good work in us will carry it to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6). There are moments when we can’t believe we will be leaving our family and friends, and moving to Hong Kong. There are moments when we see the challenges before us and wonder how things will turn out. However, we also have moments when we look forward to how we can serve God and witness lives being transformed by the gospel message in Asia. We look forward to experiencing more of God’s faithfulness to our family and church family in Hong Kong.

We are excited about the journey that God is taking us through.
